Bible Study Planning for the Rest of the Year

We're already a few weeks into the year, and if you're like me, some of those ambitious January goals might be feeling a little overwhelming right now. But here's the good news: it's never too late to create a meaningful Bible study plan that actually works for your life.

Whether you're starting fresh or renewing your commitment to Scripture, let's talk about how to plan your Bible study for the rest of the year in a way that feels sustainable, enriching, and genuinely life-giving.

Start Where You Are

First things first—let go of any guilt about what you haven't done yet this year. The beauty of God's Word is that it's always available, always relevant, and always ready to meet you exactly where you are.

Take a moment to think about what's realistic for your current season of life. Are you juggling work and family? In a busy ministry season? Going through a major transition? Your Bible study plan should fit your life, not add another layer of stress to it.

Choose Your Approach

There are so many wonderful ways to study the Bible, and the best approach is the one you'll actually stick with. Here are a few ideas to consider:

Book-by-Book Study

Pick a book of the Bible and work through it slowly and intentionally. This approach helps you understand the context and flow of Scripture. Consider starting with a Gospel, or perhaps a shorter epistle like Philippians or James.

Topical Study

Focus on specific themes that resonate with where you are right now—maybe grace, patience, identity in Christ, or God's faithfulness. This approach lets you see how themes weave throughout all of Scripture.

Chronological Reading

Follow the events of the Bible in the order they happened. This can give you a fresh perspective on familiar stories and help you see God's redemptive plan unfold.

Character Study

Dive deep into the life of a biblical figure—their struggles, their faith journey, and what God taught them. This can be incredibly relatable and encouraging.

Create a Flexible Schedule

Here's where planning meets reality. Instead of creating a rigid daily schedule that falls apart the first time life gets busy, build in flexibility from the start.

Set a realistic frequency. Maybe it's five days a week, giving yourself grace for busy days. Or perhaps you commit to three solid study sessions each week. What matters is consistency over perfection.

Choose your time. Are you a morning person who loves starting the day with Scripture? Or do you find more focus in the evening when things quiet down? Honor your natural rhythms.

Decide on duration. Fifteen focused minutes can be more valuable than an hour of distracted reading. Start with what feels manageable and let it grow naturally.

Gather Your Tools

You don't need a lot, but having the right resources can enrich your study time:

  • A Bible translation you connect with – whether that's NIV, ESV, NLT, or another version that speaks to you

  • A journal or notebook – for writing down insights, questions, and prayers

  • A few colored pens or highlighters – if visual note-taking helps you process

  • A study Bible or commentary – optional, but helpful for deeper understanding

  • A quiet space – even if it's just a corner of your home with a comfortable chair

Break Down the Rest of the Year

We have about ten months left in 2026. Here's a simple framework to help you think through your study plan:

February–April (Early Spring)

Consider this your foundation-building phase. Choose one book or topic to dive into deeply. This is a great time for a Gospel study or exploring themes of new life and renewal.

May–July (Summer)

As schedules often shift in summer, this might be a good season for more flexible reading—perhaps Psalms or Proverbs, where you can read shorter passages and still gain so much.

August–October (Fall)

With routines settling back in, you might tackle something more structured—maybe a letter from Paul or a study on prayer and spiritual disciplines.

November–December (Year End)

As the year winds down, focus on themes of gratitude, faithfulness, and anticipation. The Advent season naturally lends itself to beautiful preparation and reflection.

Build in Accountability and Community

Bible study doesn't have to be a solitary journey. In fact, it's often richer when shared.

  • Find a study partner who's on a similar journey. Check in weekly about what you're learning.

  • Join or start a small group that meets regularly to discuss Scripture.

  • Share insights with friends or family—even casual conversations about what God is teaching you can deepen your understanding.

  • Use social media intentionally by following Bible teachers or joining online study communities.

Track Your Progress (Without Pressure)

Keeping track of your Bible study journey can be encouraging, but it shouldn't become another source of guilt. Consider:

  • Marking off days you studied in your planner (but don't obsess over perfect attendance)

  • Keeping a simple list of books you've read or topics you've explored

  • Taking photos of meaningful journal pages or notes

  • Writing brief monthly reflections on what God has been teaching you

The goal isn't to create the perfect tracking system—it's to notice and celebrate how you're growing.

When You Fall Off Track

Because you will. We all do. Life happens, seasons change, and sometimes the plan you made doesn't fit anymore. And that's okay.

When you realize you've gotten off track, resist the urge to give up entirely or to punish yourself with an unrealistic "catch-up" plan. Simply open your Bible again. Start fresh from where you are. God's mercies are new every morning, and that includes your Bible study journey.

Make It Personal and Prayerful

The most important element of any Bible study plan is approaching Scripture with a heart open to transformation. This isn't about checking boxes or gaining head knowledge—it's about encountering the living God through His Word.

Before you open your Bible, take a moment to pray. Ask God to speak to you, to give you understanding, and to help you apply what you learn. Invite the Holy Spirit to be your teacher.

Your Plan for the Rest of 2026

So here's what I encourage you to do today:

  1. Take ten minutes to think about what kind of Bible study would feel most meaningful to you right now

  2. Choose your approach—book, topic, character, or another method that excites you

  3. Decide on a realistic schedule that fits your life

  4. Gather your tools

  5. Mark your first study session in your calendar

  6. Start tomorrow (or today!)

Remember, the goal isn't to become a Bible scholar by December. The goal is to know God more deeply, to be transformed by His truth, and to let Scripture shape how you think, feel, and live.

🌟 Final Thoughts

You have ten beautiful months ahead. Ten months to dig into God's Word, to discover new truths, to be challenged and comforted, and to grow in your faith.

The rest of your year in God's Word starts now. And I'm cheering you on every step of the way.
