How to Design Your Own Printable Journal Pages

ree

Journaling isn’t just about words on paper—it’s about creating a space that feels yours. And one of the best ways to make journaling more personal (and more fun!) is by designing your own printable journal pages.

Whether you’re a seasoned journaler or just dipping your toes into the world of daily reflection, creating your own designs in Canva means you get to decide what your pages look like. Want minimal? Go for it. Want whimsical doodles in the corners? Done. Want a spread that screams “cozy fall vibes” or “bright summer sunshine”? You can make that happen, too!

Today, I’m going to show you how to design journal pages that are both practical and pretty. ✨

Step 1: Decide What Type of Journal Pages You Want

Before you open Canva, think about what kind of journaling you do:

  • Daily Journaling → simple lined pages with space for a date and thoughts.

  • Gratitude Journaling → a structured layout with prompts like “Today I’m thankful for…”

  • Creative Journaling → doodle spaces, quotes, and fun decorative frames.

  • Goal Setting → habit trackers, to-do boxes, and intention-setting sections.

Knowing your purpose makes designing easier (and ensures your journal pages get used instead of collecting digital dust).

Step 2: Pick a Size

Most printable journals use US Letter (8.5 x 11) or A5 (5.8 x 8.3). Both work beautifully—letter size is great for at-home printing, while A5 is perfect if you love smaller binders or planners.

In Canva, just select “Custom Size” and set your dimensions before you start designing.

Step 3: Create a Layout You’ll Love

This is where Canva really shines! A few easy layout ideas:

  • Columns → Split your page into two for journaling + doodling.

  • Prompts + Space → Add a text box with a guiding question, and leave lots of blank space.

  • Trackers → Use grids, shapes, or icons to build habit trackers or mood logs.

  • Borders & Accents → Upload digital scrapbook paper, washi tape, or clipart for flair.

Keep it simple—you don’t want to crowd your page so much that it feels overwhelming.

Step 4: Add Personality

Here’s where your style comes in. Play with:

  • Fonts → Script fonts for headings, clean fonts for writing spaces.

  • Colors → Soft neutrals for calm, bold brights for energy.

  • Graphics → Florals, watercolor splashes, or themed embellishments.

  • Quotes → Add motivational or seasonal quotes to make pages inspiring.

Step 5: Save and Print

When you’re happy with your design, download as PDF (Print) in Canva. Print a few copies at home—or have them printed and bound for a polished look.

You’ve officially created your own printable journal pages! 🎉
