How to Design Blog Graphics That Stop the Scroll

đŸ–Œ Because in a sea of content, your visuals need to shout “click me!”

Let’s be real — you can write the most insightful, well-crafted blog post in the world
but if your graphic doesn’t grab attention, it might never get the clicks it deserves.

Your blog graphics are the first impression your post makes on Pinterest, Facebook, Instagram, or even your own homepage. Done right, they’ll not only stop people mid-scroll but also make them curious enough to click through and read every word.

Today, I’m sharing my step-by-step process for creating blog graphics in Canva that do exactly that.

✏ Step 1: Start with a Strong Headline

Your headline is the heart of your graphic. Instead of copying your blog title word-for-word, try rephrasing it to be more curiosity-driven or benefits-focused.

Example:

  • Blog Title → “How to Organize Your Scrapbooking Supplies”

  • Graphic Headline → “The Scrapbooking Storage System That Changed My Life”

Shorter, bolder phrases often work better on visuals because they’re easier to read quickly.

🎹 Step 2: Pick the Right Size for Each Platform

Different platforms = different dimensions.

  • Pinterest → 1000 x 1500 px (vertical)

  • Facebook/Instagram → 1080 x 1080 px (square)

  • Blog Post Header → 1200 x 628 px (horizontal)

Canva makes this easy with its built-in size templates — just search the platform name when starting your design.

đŸ–Œ Step 3: Use High-Impact Imagery

Your background image should instantly relate to your content. Options include:

  • Photos you’ve taken yourself

  • Canva’s free or premium stock images

  • Flat-lay or mockup images that you customize

Tip: Make sure your image isn’t too busy. If needed, use Canva’s blur tool or add a semi-transparent overlay so your text pops.

🖋 Step 4: Play with Fonts & Hierarchy

Fonts should be bold, easy to read, and consistent with your brand. For example:

  • One bold display font for the main headline

  • One clean sans-serif font for subtext

Always make your most important words the largest, so they stand out even at a glance.

🌟 Step 5: Add Branding Without Overcrowding

Your blog graphics should be instantly recognizable. Add:

  • Your brand colors

  • Your website URL

  • A small logo or watermark

Keep it subtle so it doesn’t overpower the design, but consistent enough that viewers start to associate your style with your brand.

📌 Step 6: Test Variations

Here’s a secret: you can make 2–3 versions of the same blog graphic and post them at different times. Sometimes a small change in colors, fonts, or images can double your clicks.

💛 Final Thoughts

Blog graphics aren’t just decoration — they’re an invitation to your audience. A well-designed graphic is like a friendly wave across the internet saying, “Hey, you’ll love what’s inside.”

So the next time you publish a post, don’t just hit “publish” and hope for the best. Open Canva, make a bold, beautiful graphic, and give your content the attention it deserves.
