How Often Should You Email Your List? (And What to Say)

ree

If you’ve started building an email list, first of all—congratulations! 🎉 That’s one of the smartest moves you can make for your creative business. But if you’ve ever stared at your email platform and thought, “How often should I be emailing my subscribers? And what on earth do I say?” — you’re not alone.

The good news? There isn’t one single “perfect” answer. The right frequency depends on your audience, your goals, and your content style. But I’m here to share some simple tips to help you create a schedule (and content plan) that works for you and your subscribers.

How Often Should You Email?

Here are a few common rhythms:

  • Once a Week: The sweet spot for most creators. Weekly emails keep you consistent without overwhelming your audience.

  • Twice a Month: Great if you’re just starting out and want to stay connected without overcommitting.

  • Twice a Week: Works if you have a lot of valuable content (like blog posts, product updates, or freebies). But only if you can stay consistent!

  • Monthly: Better than nothing, but can feel a little too spread out if you want to grow quickly.

✨ Pro Tip: It’s less about how often you email and more about being consistent. If your subscribers know to expect you every Friday morning, they’ll look forward to it!

What Should You Say in Your Emails?

This is where many people get stuck. But email doesn’t have to be complicated. Here are a few ideas:

  • Share a Story → A personal anecdote or behind-the-scenes look at your creative process.

  • Teach Something → A tip, tutorial, or quick win your audience can use right away.

  • Offer Inspiration → A quote, journaling prompt, or encouragement your readers will love.

  • Promote Gently → Share your new Etsy product, a blog post, or even an affiliate resource you recommend.

  • Give a Freebie → Everyone loves a surprise!

The trick is to balance value with promotion. Think 80% serving, 20% selling.

Tools That Make It Easier

If you’re worried about running out of ideas, here’s a little secret: your email content can often come straight from the things you’re already creating. Write a blog post? Share it in your newsletter. Designing new scrapbook paper? Highlight it in your email. Creating a free printable? Send it as a gift.

For design help, I always turn to Canva for graphics and Creative Fabrica for fonts, patterns, and extras that make my newsletters look polished and professional. These tools make it easy to design email headers, freebie downloads, and templates your readers will actually want to click.
