Why scrapbook paper makes the best gift tags
Scrapbook paper is one of the easiest supplies to turn into high-end looking gift tags. It’s sturdy enough to hold its shape, comes in coordinated collections, and it’s already designed to mix patterns and colors—so your tags look intentional without a lot of effort.
In this post, you’ll learn a simple, repeatable method for making gift tags from scrapbook paper, plus design ideas and finishing touches that make them look polished.
Supplies you’ll need
Scrapbook paper (12x12 or 8.5x11 works)
Tag template (or a ruler for a quick rectangle)
Scissors or a paper trimmer
Hole punch (single-hole or tag punch)
Twine, ribbon, or string
Optional: cardstock (for backing), ink pad, stamps, label maker, stickers, enamel dots, washi tape
Step-by-step: DIY gift tags using scrapbook paper
1) Pick a paper combo that “reads” quickly
Gift tags are small, so choose patterns that don’t need a lot of space to look good.
Best choices: small florals, polka dots, tiny gingham, subtle textures, and simple stripes
Use bold prints sparingly: save them for a border, accent strip, or backing
Quick trick: Pair one patterned sheet + one solid or subtle texture so the name stands out.

2) Cut your tag shape
A classic gift tag size is about 2" x 3.5", but anything in that range works.
Cut a rectangle first.
Snip the top corners at an angle to make the traditional tag shape.
If you like consistency (especially if you’re making a batch), use a printable template.
3) (Optional) Add a sturdy backing
If your scrapbook paper is thin or you want a more premium feel:
Glue the cut tag onto cardstock.
Trim the edges so the cardstock is perfectly aligned.
This makes the tag easier to write on and helps it hold up when tied to a gift.
4) Punch the hole
Punch a hole centered near the top (about 1/4"–3/8" from the edge).
Optional upgrade: Reinforce the hole with a small circle sticker, eyelet, or a quick ring of clear tape on the back.
5) Add a “to/from” area that’s easy to write on
Writing directly on a dark or busy pattern can be frustrating, so build in a clean spot:
Add a small piece of white cardstock as a label
Use a pre-made sticker label
Stamp a simple frame or “To/From” line
Layer a solid strip across the bottom third of the tag
6) Finish with a simple embellishment
A little detail goes a long way. Pick one finishing touch so the tag doesn’t feel cluttered:
A tiny bow
A mini sticker
A wax seal-style sticker
A small charm
A strip of washi tape
7) Tie it on
Thread twine or ribbon through the hole and knot it.
Tip: If you’re tying onto a gift bag handle, a shorter loop looks neat; for wrapped gifts, a longer loop tucks nicely under ribbon.
Easy design ideas (choose one “formula” and repeat)
If you’re making a set, repetition is what makes everything look cohesive. Try one of these:
Border + label: patterned border strip at the bottom + white label for the name
Layered look: patterned tag + solid cardstock backing + small sticker accent
Minimal + elegant: solid or linen-texture paper + twine + a simple stamped name
Holiday batch: same tag shape, three coordinated patterns, one consistent label style
Pro tips for prettier tags (without extra work)
Ink the edges: Lightly run an ink pad along the tag edges for a finished, vintage look.
Round the corners: A corner punch instantly upgrades the shape.
Make a “tag station”: Cut a pile of tag bases first, then decorate assembly-line style.
Keep it readable: Whatever pattern you choose, make sure there’s a clear spot for names.
🌟 Final Thoughts
DIY gift tags using scrapbook paper are one of those small details that make a gift feel extra thoughtful. Once you pick a tag size and a simple design “formula,” you can make a whole batch in under an hour.
Happy crafting!
