5 Crafts for the 4th of July

Celebrate with 5 Easy 4th of July Crafts

If you love the red, white, and blue vibe but don’t want anything complicated, these simple projects are festive, budget-friendly, and easy to do with kids, friends, or on your own. Most of them use supplies you probably already have—plus a few fun add-ons if you want to dress them up.

Before you start, grab a quick craft kit:

  • Cardstock in red, white, and blue

  • Scissors + glue (or a glue stick)

  • Tape (washi tape is a bonus)

  • Markers/paint

  • Ribbon or twine

  • Optional: glitter, star confetti, stickers

1) Paper Pinwheel Parade

Pinwheels are classic for the 4th of July—and they look amazing stuck into planters, lined up on a porch, or handed out at a backyard BBQ.

You’ll need

  • Square paper (cardstock works best)

  • Push pin + pencil with eraser (or a brad + straw)

  • Bead (optional, helps it spin smoothly)

Steps

  1. Cut a square (about 6"–8" works well).

  2. Draw diagonal lines from corner to corner. Cut along each diagonal toward the center, stopping about 1" before the middle.

  3. Fold every other corner into the center.

  4. Push a pin through all folded corners, add a bead if you have one, and secure into the pencil eraser.

Make it extra festive: Use star-pattern paper or add tiny star stickers to the blades.

2) Firework Salt Paint (Messy, but Worth It)

This one is a showstopper—especially for kids. The salt creates a sparkling texture that looks like fireworks bursting on the page.

You’ll need

  • Thick paper (watercolor paper is ideal)

  • Glue

  • Table salt

  • Watercolors (or watered-down acrylic)

Steps

  1. Draw firework bursts with glue: a center dot with radiating lines.

  2. Sprinkle salt over the wet glue and shake off the excess.

  3. While the glue is still tacky, tap watercolor onto the salted glue lines.

  4. Let dry fully before moving.

Tip: Dark paper backgrounds (or painting a navy wash first) make the “fireworks” pop.

3) Stars & Stripes Mason Jar Luminary

These are perfect for an evening cookout. They’re a great way to reuse jars and add a cozy glow.

You’ll need

  • Clean mason jar (or any glass jar)

  • Tissue paper or thin paper

  • Mod Podge (or watered-down glue)

  • Battery tea light (recommended for safety)

Steps

  1. Cut tissue paper into strips (red/white) and small squares (blue).

  2. Brush glue onto the jar and layer the paper: stripes around the sides, blue “panel” near the top.

  3. Add star confetti or cut paper stars for the blue section.

  4. Seal with a final glue layer and let dry.

  5. Drop in a battery tea light.

Style idea: Wrap twine around the jar neck and tie a simple bow.

4) Patriotic Wand (Great for Parades)

If you’re going to a community parade or watching fireworks outdoors, these are fun to wave—and they make cute photo props.

You’ll need

  • Wooden dowel or sturdy straw

  • Ribbon/tulle in red, white, and blue

  • Star cutouts (foam, felt, or cardstock)

  • Hot glue (adult help) or strong tape

Steps

  1. Cut ribbon into lengths (about 18"–24").

  2. Glue or tape ribbons to the top of the dowel.

  3. Add a star cutout on the front for a bold focal point.

Optional: Write names or “USA” on the star for party favors.

5) Printable Banner (Instant Party Decor)

A banner pulls the whole space together—indoors or outdoors—and it’s easy to customize for your party vibe.

You’ll need

  • Printable banner flags (or cardstock + markers)

  • String or twine

  • Hole punch or tape

Steps

  1. Print your banner flags and cut them out.

  2. Punch holes (or fold the top edge over the string and tape).

  3. String them up across a mantel, fence, or snack table.

Make it yours: Mix “Happy 4th,” “Let Freedom Ring,” or just alternating stars and stripes.

Quick Craft Success Tips

  • Do a 5-minute test first (one pinwheel, one salt-paint burst). You’ll feel more confident for the rest.

  • Pre-cut materials for kids: squares, ribbon lengths, star shapes.

  • Set up a “drying zone”: a cookie sheet or cardboard keeps projects from migrating.

  • Keep cleanup easy: baby wipes + a trash bag nearby = less stress.

🌟 Final Thoughts

Crafting for the 4th of July doesn’t have to be complicated to look special. Pick one project for quick fun, or combine a few (banner + luminaries + wands) for a full celebration setup.
